Water Damage Restoration: A SERVPRO® Short Story

8/14/2023 (Permalink)

Have you ever wondered what a day in the life of a SERVPRO® technician looks like? Read Emily's story below to get a sneak peek!

Water Damage Restoration Short Story

In the heart of a rain-soaked town, a SERVPRO technician named Emily was a silent hero working to undo the havoc wreaked by a sudden and merciless storm. As dawn broke, the phone rang, summoning her to a home that had become a victim of relentless flooding.

Arriving at the scene, Emily stepped into ankle-deep water, her SERVPRO uniform ready to bear witness to the challenging task ahead. With a determined nod, she began her meticulous dance with the water's chaos.

First, Emily assessed the extent of the water damage, a critical step that would shape her plan of action. She meticulously cataloged the affected areas, from drenched carpets to soggy walls, ensuring no detail escaped her watchful eye.

Equipped with an arsenal of specialized tools, Emily initiated the water extraction process. Her nimble fingers worked deftly as she wielded industrial-grade pumps, swiftly draining the stagnant water that had invaded the home's sanctity. Her movements were deliberate, each action inching the house closer to its former glory.

As the last of the water vanished, Emily's focus shifted to drying and dehumidifying the space. She strategically placed high-powered air movers and dehumidifiers, orchestrating a symphony of airflow that whisked away moisture, one molecule at a time. It was a delicate ballet of science and technique, executed flawlessly by Emily's experienced hands.

With the environment primed, Emily turned her attention to the aftermath of the flood: damaged furniture, warping wood, and the musty scent that clung to the air. Her skilled touch brought these elements back to life. She meticulously cleaned and sanitized surfaces, her meticulous efforts erasing any traces of the disaster.

Emily's dedication was more than just a job; it was an act of restoring normalcy to a family's life. The gratitude in their eyes as they surveyed their rejuvenated home was the ultimate reward for her hard work.

In the end, Emily stood amidst a scene of triumph. The water damage had been tamed, the chaos quelled. Her role as a SERVPRO technician had not only salvaged a house but also rekindled hope. And as Emily left the once-flooded home, her steps were light with the knowledge that she had made a difference – one that would resonate long after the floodwaters had receded.

Preventing Springtime Water Damage

3/14/2022 (Permalink)

We all know the old saying, "April showers bring May flowers." With springtime comes melting snow and heavy downpours, which can bring unwanted surprises to light on your property like roof leaks or water that comes through in your basement's foundation. Soggy carpet and dripping ceilings often lead to water damage. Have no fear! Taking the following steps can help prevent water damage in the spring.

Tips to Prevent Springtime Water Damage

  • Groom your gutters. Keep the flow flowing! By cleaning your gutters and keeping them damage free, water will be directed away from your house with downspout extensions.
  • Cover up! Using plastic covers around window wells can keep rain from seeping in.
  • Show your roof some love. Give your roof some much needed TLC by replacing missing singles, any damage from storms or weather, and keep flashing sealed. We promise it's worth the effort!
  • Be an Einstein landscaper. When putting decoration or landscaping around your home, make sure to slope the ground away from your foundation. This will help prevent water from pooling and causing future water damage issues.
  • It's all about the foundation. By repairing cracks and holes in your home's foundation as soon as they are found, you can keep the water away and minimize your odds of water damage!

Here at SERVPRO of Minnetonka, we know that water damage can be a hassle. If you follow the above tips, you might just save yourself from seeing our bright green vans. Whether you use our tips or not, water damage can still happen. That's where we come in!

Preventing Household Winter Water Damage

1/23/2022 (Permalink)

frozen pipe from water damage With our vast commercial and residential water damage restoration capabilities, you'll never have to ask yourself who to call again!

No matter the season somehow water can always find a way to damage properties. During the cold season, uninsulated pipes can freeze and burst, ice dams can cause roofing issues, and thawed snow can enter basements. Read the blog below to see what you can do as a property manager to prevent winter water damage.

Prevent Frozen Pipes

  • Insulate all water pipes in unheated areas whether its a crawl space, under the kitchen, in the basement, or behind bathroom cabinets.
  • Ensure that you leave your home at an adequate temperature if you leave for an extended period of time. If you're nervous about the functionality of your heating system, a trusted person should check on your home once a week.
  • Running a trickle of water through pipes will help prevent them from freezing. Although this is not a long-term solution, it can help save your pipes from bursting in a pinch.

Preventing Ice Dams

  • Keep the snow on your roof under 15 centimeters. To remove snow from the roof, use a roof rake or long-handled brush to avoid using a ladder.
  • Insulate your attic to prevent warm air from melting snow on your roof. If water is melting and then freezing, it can cause ice dams to form at the edge of your roof.
  • Install a water membrane underneath the roof shingles to help prevent water from seeping in.

General Winter Water Damage Safety Tips

  • Place a water leak detector near high risk areas such as on sump pumps, near water-bearing fixtures, and around pipes.
  • Check your water supply lines annually for leaks. Appliances such as the hot water heater, washing machine, and refrigerator will have these supply lines.
  • Disconnect your outdoor hoses. This will prevent water from getting into the line and creating a blockage which in turn can cause backflow.

Preventing Winter Water Damage

11/30/2021 (Permalink)

In Minnesota, winter is cold, uncomfortable, and unfortunately brings with it the scary possibility that your home will suffer winter water damage. When temperatures dip below freezing, there are several things that can cause dramatic water damage in your property. See the water damage prevention tips below to see how regular maintenance and inspection can lower your risks for water damage.

Here are the top causes of water damage in the winter:

Burst Pipes

Extremely low temperatures can wreak havoc on pipes. Many people think that pipes burst because of the freezing and expanding, however, it is more from the increasing water pressure when there is blockage. By ensuring that your pipes have proper insulation, you can reduce the risk of having a burst pipe during the winter months. Any pipes that lead to the outdoors or are outdoors, including anything in a weakly heated area (some basements and garages) should be properly insulated. A trick to make sure that your pipes don't freezing is to leave your faucets with a small drip so that water is constantly flowing in the pipe, making it unable to freeze.

Blocked Gutters

Gutters are made to bring water to a safe place away from your home so that water damage does not occur. Many people, unfortunately, take their utters for granted. If your gutters are clogged with materials like ice or debris, it may lead to a serious issue. When water freezes within your gutters, this water can seep into your home and cause damage when it begins melting. Make sure to keep your gutters clean at all times so that water does not have a chance to build up and freeze, creating a blockage and problems down the line.

Exterior Water Sources

Water sources from the outdoors can become even more dangerous in freezing temperatures even more so than in the summer. Make sure to drain any garden hoses and store them somewhere safe for the winter. Shut off your outdoor water valves so that in the event of a pipe burst, water will not rush back into your home.

Even if you take all of the precautionary measures listed in this blog, you may still experience water damage. If you are unequipped to restore water damage within your home, call our certified technicians at 952-473-4837. SERVPRO of Minnetonka will make sure your water damage restoration is done right.

Water Damage Restoration

When you have a water damage event on your property, SERVPRO of Minnetonka will respond quickly to prevent further damage and begin the water repair and restoration process.

Water damage is caused by intruding water that attacks materials, creating rotting wood, microbial growth, bacterial growth, rusting of steel, swelling of wood, and de-lamination of materials like carpet and plywood.

Originating from a wide variety of sources like a dishwasher hose, a washing machine overflow, broken and leaking pipes, flooding, and building envelope failures, 13.7% of all water used in a home today can be attributed to plumbing leaks.

Small Hole, Massive Problem

On average, each home in the United States will waste approximately 10,000 gallons of water. per year For example, a tiny 1/8th inch hole in a pipe can release almost 250 gallons of water per day. This scary statistic alone should be enough reasoning as to why you should replace any worn pipe fittings and hose connections to all household appliances that use water at least once per year.

Following Procedure

The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is one of the main certifying bodies that regulates and educates our technicians on water damage restoration procedures. Although every water damage event is different, the water damage restoration steps are often the same. To review how we handle water damage restoration, check out our process here.

Why choose SERVPRO of Minnetonka?

Traveling Water Issues in Minnetonka, MN

11/8/2021 (Permalink)

water damage in bedroom Whether you live near Lake Minnetonka, in the urban areas of Minneapolis and St. Paul, or in surrounding communities, we can help!

Traveling Water Damage

When your property faces water damage, it can be an eye-opening experience. The effects of water damage can be extremely daunting as the building's materials and your personal contents are being soaked from the water. In this blog, you will discover that three are steps that you can take in order to minimize the amount of water damage that will occur.

Follow these water damage cleanup steps:

Eradicate the source of the water.

  • Although this is seemingly obvious, many people will panic when they see flooding water on their property. Before you move on to any of the next steps, you need to complete this one first, without a doubt. Sometimes the source of the water isn't obvious and you will have to search around your property for a burst pipe, a broken water heater, or even a blocked gutter.

Remove as much water as possible.

  • Make sure that the water is not contaminated before trying to extract the water! If the water is dirty (sewage, flood water, or has been sitting for a long period of time) you should always wait for a water restoration professional to avoid illness. If there are only a few inches on the floor, you can use whatever tools you have available to clean it up.

Separate all personal items from the affected areas.

  • To prevent your personal belongings from suffering water damage, remove all materials that not are not attached to the floors or the walls. Make certain that you are grabbing any porous materials like wood, fabrics, and paper because they pose the highest risk for permanent damage.

Get those fans movin'!

  • One of the most important parts of the drying process is to remove as much moisture from the air as possible. You can use any dehumidifiers or large fans in addition to opening windows as long as the outside conditions will allow for proper drying. By keeping the air circulating, you will prevent bacterial growth and promote drying.

If you are unable to perform any of these functions yourself, give us a call! We're professionally trained and always ready for anything!

Tips for Preventing Water Damage in your Home

Water damage is one of the most common structural damage problems home and business owners have to deal with. Unlike other types of damage, which tend to be sudden and easy to notice, water damage usually happens slowly over time and is not noticeable until it's too late. However, some types of water damage, such as those from hurricanes and thunderstorms, can occur very quickly with disastrous results.

If you want to make sure that you never have to call for a water damage restoration company near you, it's best to prepare your property for water damage before disaster strikes.

The easiest way to avoid having to call an excellent water damage restoration company such as ours is to try to avoid water damage altogether. Although this can be a tall order, especially within storm season, that gives you all the more reason to be prepared.

4 Essential Water Damage Prevention Practices:

Fix and renovate your plumbing.

Most people associate water damage with thunderstorms and hurricanes, when in reality, the real problem is bad plumbing. Whether it's a new but poorly constructed building or an older building that has had no plumbing renovation in decades - a water pipe burst in a house can wreak havoc either way. Updating your plumbing can be as simple as starting with the hoses and faucets and then you can move on to the seals and pipes.

Take care of your building's exterior structure.

Storms and other disastrous weather conditions are a primary task for water restoration companies. To avoid having to deal with the consequences of a weather disaster, it is crucial to renovate your building's exterior by:

  • Caulking and sealing windows
  • Installing impact windows
  • Replace missing or damage shingles on your roof
  • Clean downspouts and install gutter guards
  • Repair outside walls if they are not fully sealed

Prevent water seepage by resealing your basement.

Basement water damage restoration is extremely common for our business. It is an extremely common area or water seepage to occur. Routinely check for cracks in the building's foundation and floor slabs - make it an effort to reseal them. Be sure to install backwater valves to your sewage system to help avoid sewer backup.

Keep your eyes peeled for mold growth.

Mold is not only caused by water damage, but it also causes further water damage by eroding your building's foundation. Check for mold growth in your basement, crawlspace, and roof to make sure that your structure is in superior condition.

If you are unsure whether or not you have water damage or mold damage, we are a water damage restoration resource for you. Give us a call at 952-473-4837 with any of your needs.

How To Tell If Water Damage Is Old

7/19/2021 (Permalink)

As water damage restoration experts, we understand the issues that water damage presents, especially when it isn't in your sight. When discovered, water spots are clues that indicate a leaky pipe or condensation that is generating the problem.

Even though it impossible to know exactly how long your water damage issues have lingered, there are steps you can take to tell if your water damage is old or new.

Steps to Determining if your Water Damage is Old

  1. Review the history of the house. As soon as water spots are discovered, take note of when you found them. IT's important to recognize and understand what is new and what is old because smaller leaks can take months to appear.
  2. Touch the water spot. Water damage drywall or a water damage ceiling spot will be mushy and squishy since the material will have soaked up a fair amount of water. A newer spot will be wet, but the drywall and ceiling will remain strong.
  3. Examine the materials. It's important to know what materials your walls and ceilings are composed of because thick paint or tiles can trap water. If this is the circumstance, even a small spot where there is water damage can indicate that it has been around for awhile.

Are you still unsure how to tell if water damage is old or new? Give us a call today!

Foundation Water Damage: Know the Warning Signs

2/22/2021 (Permalink)

foundation cracks We’re dedicated to responding immediately when you contact us. A fast response lessens the damage, limits further damage, and reduces cost.

You can't build a strong home on a weak foundation.

Foundation water damage weakens the structure of your home, causes cracks, bowed walls, and can be as extreme as causing your home to collapse.

Here's how to identify and address the early signs of foundation water damage:

Cracks.

Cracks may appear on both the interior and exterior of a home and are a tell-tale sign of foundation water problems. On the exterior, a few hairline cracks aren't normally a concern. It is important to be aware of horizontal cracks and stair-step cracks in block walls or corners. This may indicate serious structural damage and you should consult a water damage professional like SERVPRO of Minnetonka.

Standing water in a basement or crawlspace.

Water in a basement could be an indication of a plumbing issue, however it could also mean that there is water seeping in through cracks in the foundation or gutter runoff. Either way, they're both causing issues and should be addressed immediately. Seeping water is a perfect host for mold growth and can weaken wooden support structures.

Windows and doors are jamming.

Excess water absorption in a building can cause frames to warp, which means that there is probably a waterproofing problem. Excess outside moisture can also cause your entire foundation to shift, leading to much bigger issues that will need to be addresses.

Mold Patches or Rotting Wood

As we've stated before, mold needs two things to grow: a source of moisture and organic material. If you can't spot the mold with your eyes, you'll without a doubt be able to smell the distinct mildew scent. Mold remediation should be enacted as quickly as possible once you discover mold. Mold could result from a crack or opening in the foundation that's allowing water to seep in.

Flooded soil.

If your gutters or other drainage systems are not doing their job properly, it can cause water to redirect back to your foundation instead of away from your house. If you see pools of water around your home, the wet soil will increase the likelihood that water will penetrate the foundation of your home.

It is important to keep track of your preventative maintenance on your home. Most importantly, if you suspect you have foundation water damage the best thing you can do is call SERVPRO of Minnetonka at 952-473-4837.

Cracking Water Damage Myths

2/15/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO logo destination tag We're dedicated to responding immediately when you contact us.

Water damage can catch you off guard and can be frightening. It must be taken care of as quickly as humanly possible to avoid secondhand damages and lead to further issues. Although this may not be as exciting as a Mythbusters episode, here are six myths that have been uncovered about water damage.

Uncovering the Truth

My insurance won't cover it. Many times people believe that if their home suffers a small flood, the money used to clean up and repair the damages will come straight from their pockets. This is untrue! Although it's very important to be on top of your homeowner's insurance, in most cases it will cover the damages. Each situation is unique but we will work with your insurance company to get you the best plan for your buck!

The water will dry itself. The water that you can see with your own eyes will surely dry, but if there is a flood in your home, water will seep into your walls and underneath your flooring. If you do not take care of the hidden materials that are wet, moisture can lead to the formation of mold. Mold remediation is more complicated and can lead to higher expenses. SERVPRO of Minnetonka has state-of-the-art industrial strength equipment. Let us handle the drying for you.

It won't stink. Water damaged areas will begin to smell if they are not properly and completely dried out and treated with an antimicrobial. Not only does mold smell bad, but it can cause health effects. Our expert technicians follow a standard procedure to clean, disinfect, and sanitize a wide variety of materials.

It can wait. Really, it's not a big deal. WRONG. The window between water damage and the growth of mold is extremely short. The second that water hits any surface of your home there is a risk for extensive damage. Even the smallest of water damage situations can lead to serious complications.

My wood floors are ruined. SERVPRO of Minnetonka has a wide variety of equipment to handle water and our injectiDRY system includes a mat floor drying system. It is designed specifically to handle damages on precious flooring to dry them out safely and efficiently. Not only do you avoid having to pay for new flooring, but the drying process is expedited.

If I can't see the water, it isn't there. If you have a hot water heater leak the water can hide within your sheetrock or in your ceiling. Sewer leaks can be even more dangerous. Sewage holds many hazardous chemicals and can cause you and your family to get sick. SERVPRO of Minnetonka is equipped to handle sewage and biohazard situations.

The commercial and residential water damage mitigation skills, equipment, and experience we offer are also available to homeowners. Whether you live near Lake Minnetonka, in the urban areas of Minneapolis and St. Paul, or in surrounding communities, we can help! Call 952-473-4837 today!

General Facts about Water Damage

5 Water Damage Facts

Minor existing leaks can lead to major problems.

Preventative maintenance may stop water damage accidents from occurring and if your plumbing is not properly maintained, your insurance may not cover the costs with general wear and tear. If you don't repair or keep an eye on your minor leaks, it may lead to extensive water damage.

Water contamination comes in three different types.

Set up by the IICRC, White water (category 1), Gray Water (category 2), and Black water (category 3) are the three varieties of water damage.

White water comes from a sanitary source and poses no threat to people or animals.

Dirty water comes from places such as a washing machine or a dishwasher. There is some level on contamination within these machines that have the potential to harm animals or humans.

Black water is the most minacious of the categories because this category often results from flood water or sewage posing the largest threat to humans and animals.

Time is of the essence.

To no surprise, the longer that water is sitting in your home or commercial building, the more issues will arise. Water damage is extremely invasive and gives no care in the world about personal space. Seeping in the cracks and crevices, water that sits in one spot can damage drywall, mold and mildew may spread, and paint can blister. Call 952-473-48387 right away to address any issues you may have.

Once the standing water is gone, your problems aren't necessarily solved.

Moisture can hide within the walls, underneath floors, and hard to reach areas allowing the opportunity for mold to grow. Given the right circumstances, mold can grow as soon as 24-48 hours. It is pertinent that mold be taken care of right away as it can spread rapidly, causing an upward spike in your costs.

Different materials require different cleaning protocols.

Water damage can be tricky. Depending on the extent of the damage and the affected materials, not all items may be salvageable. Concrete and harder surfaces can normally be fixed whereas soaked drywall, ceiling tiles, and insulation may need to be tossed. SERVPRO of Minnetonka has a restore vs. replace mentality to lower your overall costs.

For any of your water damage questions, comments, or concerns call us today at 952-473-4837. SERVPRO of Minnetonka will make it "Like it never even happened."

When water damages residential and commercial properties in our area, property owners have a lot of questions.

Here are the answers to your burning questions about water damage restoration.

What happens when water floods my home or business?

Once drywall comes in contact with water it begins to sag and disintegrate. If the water is not contained quickly and in a proper manner, the wood will begin to swell. The more time that water is spent within the contents of your home, the more likely your hardwood floors will buckle and warp.

Why do I need to call SERVPRO of Minnetonka? I already wiped up the water myself.

If your property was flooded with water the most important issue to address is the water that you can't see, not the water that you wiped up in the middle of your floor. Mold and mildew love to grow in the dark cavities of your home. To prevent future health and structural problems, call 952-473-4837 and leave it to the experts.

How does a professional water damage restoration contractor handle water differently than I would?

Your normal household fan and towels won't cut it when there's been excessive water damage. We use specialized industrial air movers and dehumidifiers to handle water after a flood. Our advanced technology will be placed in a precise manner, drying drying your property out as fast as possible.

How long does it take to dry my home or business?

The answer varies with every different situation. The type of water damage, the extent of the damage, how long the water was at the property, and the material that was effected. Typically water damage takes 2-3 days to dry, but if the materials have been exposed for a long period of time there may be other issues!

Is it okay to leave the equipment running all day every day?

Without a doubt! Our equipment was created to run for extended periods of time without causing any safety problems. The equipment is placed in a precise location according to our moisture mapping - do not move it!

Do I have to use the restoration company the insurance company recommends?

No way! You are free to hire whoever you want, you absolutely do not have to use what they recommend.

Why hire us? Once we have the information about the claim you make, we will communicate directly with your insurance agent. This way you'll be able to worry less - we know you've already experienced enough hassle.

Why is my basement flooding in Minneapolis?

Why Is My Basement Flooding? Sump Pumps, Seepage and More

When you suffer water damage in Minnetonka, Minneapolis or other surrounding areas, it's stressful and scary. The first thing to do is to understand what exactly causes the flooding. Let's examine flooding from leaky sump pumps, water seepage and other causes and find out how SERVPRO of Minnetonka can help.

Causes of Basement Flooding

Your basement might experience flooding for any number of reasons, and not all are weather-related. Some of the causes of a wet basement can include:

  • Leaky or failed sump pumps.
  • Foundation problems.
  • Drain damage.
  • Backed-up sewers.

Leaky or Failed Sump Pumps

Sump pumps are designed specifically to keep your basement dry and safe from water damage. Unfortunately, they're not always perfect. If your power goes out, for example, your sump pump may not work when you need it to. It may also simply be old or defective and break down, which can cause water to flow directly into your basement instead of out.

Foundation Problems

Most basement seepage is caused by issues with the foundation. The foundation might be cracked or just aged and porous. It's important to address these issues right away to stop the issue from getting worse down the line.

Drain Damage and Sewer Backups

Most basements have floor drains that lead to underground pipes designed to draw the water away from your foundation. If your drain gets blocked or the pipes get crushed or broken, water can back up and seep into your basement.

Call the Professionals

If you're experiencing basement flooding, don't let it go. Call the professionals at SERVPRO Minnetonka. We're here 24/7 to take your calls, assess the problem and get you up and running once more. Call us at 952-473-4837 today.

Spring Snow and Flooding in Minneapolis

Heavy Spring Snow in Minneapolis Can Lead to Water Damage

Recent years have shown that snow events can outlast the calendar-defined winter in Minneapolis. As the temperatures rise, the amount of water in every inch of snow falling increases, making the snow heavier. During a late-season snowstorm, the wet, weighty precipitation overburdens trees and utility poles as well as your roof. Windy weather exacerbates the situation, exposing your home to damage from toppled trees, sheared off branches, and downed wires.

Snow Is Just a Thaw Away from Water Damage

When weather compromises your roof or exterior in Minneapolis, snow invades, water damage following as it melts. Our crews hold multiple certifications that prepare them to respond rapidly to all aspects of snowstorm damage. Emergency services begin as soon as we arrive, after an assessment of safety risks. Power lines or affected electricity inside your home can expose your family or our crews to shock or electrocution. A temporary shut off protects all, allowing our employees to:

  • Board up or tarp parts of the roof and exterior to halt further snow and water incursion.
  • Begin removing snow and moving on to water pumping and extraction
  • Move contents to a more secure space

Importance of Moisture Detection and Measurement

When snow is the primary precipitation making its way inside your home, it can seem to disappear as it melts. In reality, the meltwater does remain inside your house, seeping into cracks and soaking porous building materials and causing water damage. As soon as practicable, one of our trained and skilled technicians uses sensitive moisture detection and measuring devices, including a thermal imaging camera, to follow the migration of the melted snow into building cavities, subfloors, and other structural components. SERVPRO crews then use a range of strategies to gain access to and release the water and permit drying with air movers, heat, and dehumidifiers:

  • Holes drilled after careful removal of baseboards
  • Flood cuts several inches above the watermark if drywall sustained severe saturation
  • Holes drilled in mortar joints where water hid inside cinder block cells or behind concrete or masonry
  • Drying mats using negative air pressure (suction) to pull moisture out of several layers of flooring

The highly-qualified crews of SERVPRO of Minnetonka stand ready to help you regain your home’s security and comfort after water loss following snow damage. Our phones are answered 24/7 every day of the year at (952) 473-4837.

Preparing for Winter Water Damage in Minneapolis

Water Damage Minneapolis

The changing temperatures throughout the year can harm your water pipes, as well as putting added pressure onto your sump pump. It is a good idea to run maintenance checks on appliances before the winter months roll in to ensure your home is prepared for colder weather. Pipes can freeze, causing the water inside to expand, which can be a considerable problem for metal materials. Equally, heavy rainfall may put extra pressure on gutters as well as sump pumps that dispose of water.

You may prepare yourself properly and still end up with water damage in your Minneapolis home. Despite putting in place safeguards, the unfortunate truth is that accidents do happen. When they do, SERVPRO is here to help you get your home back to a healthy condition. The worse decision you can make is to do nothing. Over time water can stagnate, particularly in areas of the home with little natural airflow. Any stored fabrics or clothing can also quickly become a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi.

At a preliminary stage, you may want to consider removing furniture from the affected area. Larger items like sofas, tables, or cabinets can be left to a SERVPRO technician. If it is not possible to remove an item, we can block furniture, placing it above the water level while work is being done. Using vent box fans, we can encourage airflow in spaces and encourage the evaporation process. Our goal is to dry your home as quickly as possible, as this remains the most effective method of water restoration.

With the property appropriately dry, SERVPRO can start working to restore any water damaged contents or decor. Prolonged exposure to moisture can result in yellowing, discoloration, or watermarks on upholstery, flooring, and walls. For carpets and fabrics, we can load pre-conditioners into our truck-mounted extractors and distribute it efficiently where needed. Roto machines can buffer flooring, and furniture can be refinished to its preloss condition.

Acting quickly to recover your property after a water incident can play a crucial role in the recovery of losses. Contact SERVPRO of Minnetonka immediately at (952) 473-4837.

Cleaning the Gutters in Your Minneapolis Home Can Prevent Water Damage

10/17/2019 (Permalink)

Hand pulling leafy debris from gutter on house Be sure and have your gutters cleaned before winter begins to prevent potential water damage.

Prevent Water Damage in Minneapolis with Fall Gutter Maintenance

Although we are used to the weather extremes in Minneapolis, our swings from summer’s hot and humid feel to the “Polar Vortex” in deep winter can be hard on our home’s systems and structure. Now that fall is firmly ensconced, and winter is on the way, make time to inspect your roof and its drainage configuration. Once winter’s frigid temperatures take hold, it is too late to prevent problems easily.

Why the Focus on Gutters and Drains?

Water damage in Minneapolis is not limited to the aftermath of burst pipes, appliance malfunctions, and severe storms. During the quiet and coziness of a gentle snowfall, your roof and the structural components of the upper levels of your home can be under attack. If ice dams form near the eaves and roof edges of your house, water can seep inside. You risk ice dam complications when warm air escapes at the joints between exterior walls and the roof, melting snow that deposits into the gutters. If your home's gutters experience clogging with leaves and debris, the water collects. Poorly attached or missing downspouts exacerbate the situation, and improperly canted gutters prevent drainage as well.

Slow, Steady, and Nearly Invisible Damage

The cycle of snow melting and freezing into ice dams eventually force moisture into your attic or highest level. Wood framing and insulation absorb the water, increasing the probability of mold growth and deterioration of the building materials. Throughout the winter, the water can migrate down and between the walls into living areas. Drywall or lath and plaster construction both experience significant damage over time. The smell of rapidly multiplying mold colonies or staining might be your first signal that months of substantial destruction have occurred without fanfare.

Maintenance Is the Key to Ice Dam Prevention

Cleaning gutters and securing downspouts is an autumn task that repays you many times over when the snow flies. A bonus is that a well-maintained gutter system also helps preserve the integrity of your home during spring showers and summer’s severe weather. Ensuring that the water running off the roof is far from your foundation prevents flooding and damage to exterior building materials. Sealing eaves and upgrading insulation also helps interrupt the melting and freezing cycle at the edge of your roof.

SERVPRO of Minnetonka is your partner if poorly draining gutters and downspouts cause water to head into your abode any time of the year. Contact us year-round at (952) 473-4837 for help with migrating water damage.

We Have The State Of The Art Equipment To Restore Your Minneapolis Home

What to Expect from Professional Water Removal Strategies in Minneapolis

Most residences in Minneapolis have full basements or a walk-out configuration with at least a portion of the foundation walls below ground. Overflows and leaks follow the path of least resistance, moving moisture to the lowest levels. Although the balance of the fluid collects below, a portion of the water absorbs into porous building materials. Retrieving the water that percolates into the foundation and evacuating moisture saturating structural components are challenges with which we can help.

Our Professionals Use Specialized Equipment

When significant water removal in your Minneapolis home is necessary after a plumbing leak or appliance malfunction, we rely on the high-efficiency, commercial-grade equipment we stock on each of our service vehicles. Submersible pumps eliminate water deeper than two inches, and then we turn to truck-mounted wanded extractors for suction of the remaining pooled liquid. If the electricity is disconnected temporarily for safety, no delay in our response is needed. Our pumps are gas-operated, and onboard generators provide the power for the extractors. We collect and dispose of the water according to local regulation.

Moisture Metering Is Essential to Water Removal

Conventional building materials, including drywall, ceiling tiles, wood framing and woodwork, flooring, and more, soak up water after an emergency. SERVPRO’s Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) training includes mastering the methodology used when employing moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other devices that measure the extent and locations of moisture saturation. We also learn how to scan for hidden caches of water. Our tolls include using infrared imaging cameras to find trapped fluid. Controlled demolition techniques like weep holes or flood cuts are options we explore to release the water.

The Mechanics of Removing Absorbed Water

Once we determine where the water migrated and the level of saturation, SERVPRO crews plan strategies to facilitate the transfer of the absorbed water into the air as vapor. We balance temperature with air movement to create the appropriate environment for the absorbed water to vaporize. The now-airborne moisture condenses or absorbs through the action of our evaporative or desiccant dehumidifiers. Lower temperatures experienced in our region during some months of the year make desiccant dehumidifiers particularly effective.

The highly-qualified employees at SERVPRO of Minnetonka use advanced techniques and technology to remove water after leaking and other crises. Call (952) 473-4837 to arrange for an expert consultation.

What Homeowners can do Before Professional Help Arrives to Mitigate Water Damage in Minneapolis

How You Can Help SERVPRO Handle Water Damage in Minneapolis

Even with recent maintenance and high-quality parts, the water lines and faucets in your Minneapolis home may still be subject to damage when you least expect it. SERVPRO stays ready on a 24/7 basis to respond to local calls for help, but before we arrive, there are still a few things you can do to help control the damage and keep costs low. Try your best to get these on-the-spot actions done before we arrive for the best results from our mitigation and restoration work.

Stop the Water

The most effective way to minimize costs related to water damage in your Minneapolis home is to cut off the flow of water as soon as possible after you discover signs of damage. Regardless of whether the problem seems to be a slow leak or a sudden water line burst, sealing up the site of damage and cutting off water flow stops any further damage from happening to your home. Most drug stores and supermarkets sell commercially-available sealant products that can apply a temporary fix to most problems. Try to pick some up and seal up the problem yourself before our professional technicians can apply a more permanent fix.

Mop Up

Some of the worst consequences of a small-scale water damage incident can only happen when moisture soaks into floor materials without getting mopped up. The faster we can remove excess water from your home, the more damage we can prevent. Mops, rags, or even paper towels should be used to soak up as much water as possible before our mitigation crew arrives with high-intensity drying equipment.

Separate Soaked Materials

Some fabric objects should be separated into their parts when soaked in water. Items you should try to space out include:

  •  Couch cushions
  •  Pillows
  •  Sheets
  •  Clothing
  •  Rugs and carpets
  •  Books and magazines

Remove any wet items and place them separate from one another in a dry part of the house. Doing so helps to prevent colors from bleeding between items and helps to prevent mold growth caused by slowness to dry.

What are Common Sources of Water Damage in Minneapolis?

6/26/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage can come from numerous sources. Call SERVPRO of Minnetonka for fast remediation.

Minneapolis Water Damage Causes Homeowners Should Know

Water damage arises when unwanted water starts to pool in places where it is should not. In most Minneapolis homes, different factors contribute to this excess water. When you know possible causes, you should take appropriate measures to ensure against a leak. You need to spot a problem when it arises and take control.  Early discovery of problems causes less work needed to restore your property.

Leaking or bursting Pipes

Pipes that leak or burst are common causes of water damage in Minneapolis. Toilets and drains that get blocked and backed up may cause a high amount of pressure in the pipe, making it to leak or bust. Another problem that makes pipes to burst is garbage disposal not working correctly. Also, roots that grow into water or sewer lines may cause bursting of pipes. Rusty or old pipes are prone to leaking. You should get professional help from SERVPRO to clean things and restore your home as soon as possible. We use specialized test equipment to find hidden water in your property.

Plumbing Problems

Most plumbing problems occur within walls and are difficult to detect. They happen when pipe and hose joints are not appropriately attached. Routine inspections by SERVPRO team helps mitigate possible plumbing problems.

HVACs

Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems are common causes of water damage. Air conditioning systems need routine servicing, and if not maintained as required, they cause moisture buildup. Moisture cools and encourages secondary water damage. We use moisture detection devices to ensure that the areas have dried up.

Malfunctioning Appliances

Household appliances get older and start to crack and rust. Also, their hoses weaken. Dishwashers, water heaters, refrigerators, and washing machines are prone to deterioration. Hot water tanks and washing machines are two primary appliances in a home that cause water damage.

Attic and Basement Concerns

Some areas of the home are susceptible to water damage. They include attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Moisture and water get to these areas from roof and pipe leaks. There is a need to inspect your home routinely in these areas.

Our Water Removal Techniques Will Restore Your Minneapolis Home To Pre-Damage Condition

4/24/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage only spreads, making mitigation crucial to protecting your home and its furnishings.

Using Water Removal Techniques Protects Both Structure And Furniture In Minneapolis Homes

Lost water inside your home can affect more than the submerged floors. SERVPRO's IICRC-certified specialists know that to restore a home in Minneapolis fully, we need to ensure that the proper level of dryness happens quickly.

After an incident, we use different water removal methods in your Minneapolis home that pull the moisture out of the home's structure and contents. Broken water pipes can leave a house's interior saturated and because moisture travels toward dry locations, low-to-the-floor furniture can soak up water from carpeting.

While heavier furniture pieces can seem stable and sturdy, water can harm these items quickly. The same components that make a sofa seem durable can also become a detriment to that piece. Wood framing can split or become warped when left wet for too long. Some pieces contain both metal fasteners and glue. Fasteners can rust and break over time while glues can soak up water and allow pieces to slip apart.

Moisture can cause problems for the exterior of the furniture in your home, also. Colors in upholstery can bleed when wet, becoming blurred and losing their fresh look. Light-colored carpeting can end up
stained from both the colors bleeding from dust covers and wooden furniture legs. SERVPRO technicians place such furniture on wooden blocks that contain no stains or dyes and place plastic tarps under the areas where fabric s from furniture can come into contact with the carpeting below.

Water damage can also take hold within the structural aspects of your house's framework. Warped beams and crumbling drywall signify the continued presence of water, letting us know we should look for other kinds of damage that also takes lengtheir periods to develop.

Areas with stains, such as those on ceilings and the upper portions of walls and peeling paint around windows and doorways can look new again with a fresh coat of primer and paint. We work with you to find the options with the lowest costs but with the best results.

SERVPRO of Minnetonka has IICRC-trained technicians who can get your Osseo, Groveland, or Saint Paul home dry again. Water damage only spreads, making mitigation crucial to protecting your home and its furnishings. Call our crew at (952) 473-4837, so we can start making your home “Like it never even happened.”

Handling Uninvited Water in Your Minneapolis Home

The need for water removal in your home is an event that catches many homeowners unprepared to handle. Whether the uninvited water is from storms, busted interior pipes or even a mini-flood from a leaking hot tub, our SERVPRO team has the tools and knowledge to remove the water and help mitigate the damage to your home and possessions and let you get your life back to normal as quickly as possible.

Water damage to your Minneapolis home should be addressed as quickly as possible after the initial incident. If there is standing water that needs to be removed, our team can extract the water by utilizing portable truck-mounted extractors and for smaller jobs, pumps and even mops and buckets. Once the water is removed, our team can select the appropriate type of drying system to lessen the chance of secondary damage. This is a necessary step because when water evaporates from surfaces, it raises the humidity of the interior and combined with temperatures lowering at night, this can cause excess moisture to condense resulting in additional property damage. Our SERVPRO team can choose the best drying system for your individual needs to avoid this scenario.

We utilize both open and closed systems to remove moist air efficiently. An open system, the moist air in the room is exchanged with drier air from the outside. Our SERVPRO technicians use industrial-air movers and fans to speed the process. A closed system is chosen when water-damaged areas are closed off from areas that do not require water or moist air removal. The use of dehumidifiers and fans is a crucial part of the closed system process. Once the water and the residual moisture has been removed from your property, our technicians can inspect and address any mold or potential mold issues to avoid future complications such as corrosion and wood damage.

SERVPRO of Minnetonka can restore your home to its preloss condition, “Like it never even happened.” We are available 24/7 for a fast response by calling (952) 473-4837.

Using an Air Scrubber After Water Damage in Minneapolis

If you experience any terrible plumbing, leaky roof, broken refrigerator, or laundry problem, then you might notice a huge puddle of water entering your establishment. Fortunately, these are often clean water, but they can still cause some issues to your home. Water damage can destroy the structure of the walls, floor, carpets, furniture, ceiling, or anything in your home. Once the water dries, it can stimulate the growth of mold, mildew, bacteria, and other microorganisms. The worst part is that the humidity from the water can contaminate the air in your surrounding. Luckily, there are tools that experts use to clean the air.

Water damage in the Minneapolis location can be quite expensive. The longer we leave the damage untreated, the worse it gets. Experts often used tools like air scrubbers to help them through the cleaning process. An air scrubber is a filtration system that removes gas, chemicals, and particles from the air. The technology basically absorbs air from the environment and filters it to remove any dirt, debris, and other contaminants. Water restoration expert often uses high-quality air scrubber to do the job. It helps them restore the air after the water damage so that the residents can breathe much better.

When the SERVPRO technicians arrive at the residential area, the first thing they would do is to remove the excess water. They want to do this as soon as possible because the longer the water lingers, the more damage that it can cause. The water restoration experts would use tools like an extractor, pump, and vacuum to get the job done efficiently. After that, they can use an advanced air scrubber to clean the surrounding air to restore your environment before the aftermath of the water damage. Once everything is complete, the SERVPRO techs can walk you through your entire home to ensure that you are satisfied with the results.

SERVPRO Knows The Most Important Steps To Solve Water Damage To Your Minneapolis Property

9/26/2018 (Permalink)

Moisture can be problematic for homeowners.

Comprehensive Restoration After Water Damage In Minneapolis

Moisture can be problematic for homeowners. After flooding or heavy rainfall, it is common for older structures to take on some water. In small quantities, this poses little problem, but introducing moisture to attics or crawlspaces can result in mold growth and cause permanent damage if left untreated. Getting an expert restoration team can help you to get your home back it to how it was, "Like it never even happened."

Properties that have recently had issues with water damage in Minneapolis could benefit from a professional restoration service. Trained technicians, like those working with SERVPRO, can clear away areas of damage you can see, as well as less visible areas that may go overlooked.

When we provide restoration services, we are looking at both short-term and long-term gains. In the short-term, we can bring in wet-dry vacuums and portable extractors to remove excess water quickly. We can also clean your structure and contents thoroughly with sanitizers and anti-microbial treatments.

SERVPRO apply preventative measures to guard against longer-term damages that can appear after the initial damage has been restored. We may include assessing your carpets to ensure they are entirely clean and free of moisture on both sides as well as inspecting the carpet pads underneath. Sometimes the surface damage is just the tip of the iceberg. By moving furniture and interior, we can check your subfloor and crawlspaces for any signs of further damage.

Before we pack up and leave, a SERVPRO technician can test and adjust your indoor humidity levels to reduce the risk of secondary damages. We do this using dehumidifiers, rapid air-movers and moisture meters in tandem. Taking a sample from an unaffected area of your home allows us to establish a dry goal that we can then work toward achieving.

One of the primary concerns for homeowners is the unpleasant odors that come with water damage. Using foggers with odor neutralizing chemicals can help to restore your home to a welcoming and clean environment. Having taken both long and short-term restoration measures a SERVPRO technician can give you a walk through, pointing out areas of concern and explaining the work carried out.

If you are looking for a comprehensive restoration service in your local community, contact SERVPRO of Minnetonka at (952) 473-4837 to arrange a visit.

Eliminating Contamination after Water Damage in Minneapolis

8/7/2018 (Permalink)

The SERVPRO Green Fleet Removes Water and Sanitizes Homes in the Greater Minneapolis Area

SERVPRO's Water Loss Recovery Service Includes Sanitizing Affected Properties

You have a lot to worry about when your Minneapolis home is awash with water. Your biggest worry is probably how to extract the water and dry the soaked contents. Contamination is probably the last thing in your mind unless the flooding is from sewage back up or stormwater. You are not alone in this line of thinking as most people only realize there is contamination at the very late stages of the restoration. So, how can you eliminate contamination through the steps taken during restoration?

The level of contamination in cases of water damage in Minneapolis depends on the kind of water that causes flooding. At SERVPRO, we follow industrial standards that identify three types of water that floods properties. These types are black, grey and clean water and the contamination levels are highest in black water and lowest or nonexistent in clean water. Even potable drinking water can degrade to gray or black water if left unattended.

In addition to identifying the water type, our SERVPRO technicians also consider the materials affected by the water. If there was a carpet affected by clean or grey water, we treat it on both sides with an EPA-registered disinfectant. We also use the same disinfectant on the floor after extracting the water. This minimizes chances of further contamination. Any upholstery in the affected area might also be contaminated. Unlike the carpet, which is easier to clean, upholstery has different nooks and crannies, so it requires special attention. Using tools such as ULV foggers, our team can administer the disinfectant in the form of a mist to reach and remove contaminants even in hidden parts of any upholstery item. Generally, we can group furnishings in a containment chamber for large disinfecting efforts.

Cleanliness is a relative state that depends on the percentage of contaminants eliminated. Properties can achieve four different levels of cleanliness depending on the effort put. From the dirty state, cleaning can change the property to sanitary or disinfected. This recovery from a water loss is the states that SERVPRO technicians can achieve. Sterile conditions are beyond our scope and service. These environments are needed in hospitals, labs, and other such structures. Reaching a sanitary state is the goal of most restoration processes. Our SERVPRO technicians extract the water, vacuum and deodorize any affected areas ensuring they attain sanitary conditions.

Calling SERVPRO of Minnetonka eases the restoration process. You can reach us at (952) 473-4837 any day of the week.

Removing And Remediating Water Damage In Minneapolis Residences

6/8/2018 (Permalink)

Most Minneapolis water damage comes from domestic sources like a broken pipe connection, split dishwasher hose, or another plumbing issue.

Removing And Remediating Water Damage

When water gets into a Minneapolis home, the key to preserving the structure and personal property is to remove it quickly. The longer standing water rests on carpets and floors, and soaks into furniture and other items, the more it damages it and results in more expense to a homeowner.

Most Minneapolis water damage comes from domestic sources like a broken pipe connection, split dishwasher hose, or another plumbing issue. Water from these sources is clean and therefore free of contamination unlike water from a flood or rainstorm. In this situation, SERVPRO technicians quickly begin removing water without needing to prepare for exposure to possible health risks.

They begin with a commercial grade pump to remove water deeper than an inch or two. As team members set up this device, others remove anything that might transfer a stain to floors and carpets like upholstered furniture, area rugs, curtains, and paper products like books and magazines. They place items in an unaffected area or set these items on blocks or shelves that keep them out of the water.

Once our team removes the bulk of the water, they switch to extraction wands. These smaller devices can draw out water trapped between floorboards and in carpets. They also contain a heating element so that technicians can begin the drying process at the same time. For concrete floors, team members use long-handled squeegees to push remaining surface water out of the structure.

If they find stains on carpets or rugs while removing the water, SERVPRO technicians attempt to clean them before using the extraction wands. The cleaning agents and carpet shampoo machines we utilize are more effective on wet carpets than dry ones.

With the carpets and floors now free of water, technicians next examine walls. Wood paneling can warp from exposure to too much water, and drywall panels soak up standing water at a quick rate. Our team sets-up air movers to force moisture out of these structural materials and fans to increase circulation and draw damp air outside of the home. They also install dehumidifiers to remove moisture from the surrounding air and nearby property to augment the drying process.

The goal of SERVPRO of Minnetonka is to return every home to a dry, safe condition. Regardless if you have a foot of water in your basement or a soaked living room carpet, call us today at (952) 473-4837 to schedule an appointment and receive a free estimate.

There is No Need to Panic after Experiencing Water Damage in Minneapolis

1/24/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO uses professional grade pumps to remove standing water from your home.

SERVPRO Uses Professional Grade Equipment When Restoring Your Home after Water Damage

Without experience in water damage restoration, it is hard to determine what you need to replace and what is salvageable after the unfortunate incident takes place. You also need an expert to control the damage and perform removal and cleanup activities on your Minneapolis property. It is equally important to understand some of the procedures that professionals perform when restoring your property.

One of the first steps that our SERVPRO technicians carry out when mitigating water damage on your Minneapolis property is identifying the extent of the damage. When determining the level of wetness and tracking the moisture levels, the team uses specialized tools such as moisture sensors, thermo-hygrometers, and moisture meters. Once we find the wet areas, the next step is to dry them to their preloss condition.

It means water removal is a crucial procedure towards making the restoration a success. Our IICRC certified technicians may use extractors to remove the water. In most cases, we use pumps when there is standing water in the area. Portable extractors are useful when removing water from areas with limited access; otherwise, we employ the truck mounted ones when the site is so big. Apart from water removal, these devices can clean carpets and upholstery.

Whether we are performing deodorization to neutralize the smells or using dehumidifiers to increase the rate of evaporation, observing safety measures is so important. As a result, our SERVPRO team puts on the necessary safety gear and advise our clients to stay away from the site to avoid any probable injury. We also work towards preventing possible hazards by addressing any sagging wet ceilings and turning off electrical circuits that are likely to short circuit.

SERVPRO of Minnetonka aims at making your property appear as if there was no water damage with the use of the state of the art equipment and techniques. Call us at (952) 473-4837 when faced with any size of disaster and leave the rest to us.

Don't Air Dry Water Damage in Your Groveland Home

10/8/2017 (Permalink)

Materials dry out at different rates. Professionals technicians at SERVPRO will dry out your property correctly after damage.

SERVPRO Technicians Have Many Years of Experience Properly Drying Out Homes After Water Damage

Waiting for things to air dry after a flood or other water damage incident in Groveland may seem like the most logical thing to do. Water evaporates on its own, after all, and many homeowners reason that this natural process will inevitably right things in their home. However, air drying also carries multiple downsides and potentially damaging factors. The best option is to hire a company like SERVPRO to institute a professional and expedited drying process to avoid further damage to your home. Otherwise, air drying could hurt your home in one or more ways.

Material Warping

Allowing severe water damage in your Groveland home to dry naturally should take a long time, as many materials in your home such as carpeting, fabrics, and wallpaper can have highly absorbent properties. These porous materials may adapt to the water now present between their fibers, changing shape and even chemical composition to sustain the water better. If drying is not done in a controlled fashion, these materials may warp and bend to the point where they are no longer recoverable. SERVPRO's drying process helps to mitigate some of these effects and keep most materials in an acceptable, workable state.

Mold Growth

Mold can proliferate quickly when water remains in a home and may become a major problem within days if it can find a water source. Fast drying helps to deny mold a chance to grow beyond isolated patches and spores, stopping the issue before it can get out of hand. We can even take things a step further with mold detection and deterrent technology designed to keep mold and other fungi out of the home as effectively as possible.

Breakdown of Materials

Some materials, such as wood and some fabrics, can begin to break down when submerged in water. Extended exposure to moisture can cause oxidation, acidic dissolution, or biological rotting in a wide variety of materials. The only way to protect the integrity of your home is to remove moisture as quickly as possible.

Signs of a Leaking Refrigerator in Your Minnetonka Mills Home

7/20/2017 (Permalink)

This Non-Refrigerator Leak in Minnetonka Mills Can Use the Help of SERVPRO

Leaks Can Lead to Significant Water Damage

One of the most important appliances in your home, you depend on your refrigerator working hard and keeping up with your daily demands. However, refrigerators, unfortunately, do not last forever, and the first sign it is near the end of its lifespan is sometimes the formation of a leak. Not all leaks are the same, though, and you should be aware of the different kinds.

Bottom Leaking
A leak coming from the lower part of your refrigerator causes water damage to your Minnetonka Mills home and needs to be addressed right away. A type of leak which is caused by condensation, it is a good indicator that your fridge is near the end of its days. If you are lucky, you just need to remove the water from the condensation tray. A leak coming from the bottom of your fridge is slow and steady, and you might not notice it for a while. In the meantime, mold and mildew start growing, and the flooring underneath the refrigerator suffers damage as well.

You certainly need the help of a professional water damage restoration company in a case like this. SERVPRO are the ones to call, as we get to your home fast to fix the problem and dry out your home before more damage occurs.

Leak from Ice Maker
An easy leak to spot, an ice maker leak is a rapid, steady leak, and causes damage if not fixed right away. Know what the pipe used in your ice maker is made of. Plastic pipes are well-known for getting tiny pinhole leaks which can go unnoticed for a while, doing severe damage behind your refrigerator. Copper pipes last a lot longer.

Know where the water shut-off valve is in your home. There could be one that goes right to your fridge, or you might have one for the whole house. No matter what, your first thought after noticing a leaking refrigerator should be to turn off the water supply. Then, get in contact with our technicians at SERVPRO immediately. We use special industrial tools to clean up the mess, and then repair the damages which have been done to your home. However, we do not repair or replace the appliance.

At SERVPRO of Minnetonka, we do not waste any time when it comes to water damage. We understand that the longer the water sits in your home, the more damage and mold growth there is. Contact us whenever you need at (952) 473-4837.

The Five Step Repair Plan for Water Damage in Minnetonka

4/13/2017 (Permalink)

Burst pipes can cause extensive water damage. Call SERVPRO for expert remediation.

Steps to take after water damage

Unfortunately for homeowners, there is a surprising number of ways for excess water to get inside a property. The most common is a broken pipe in the kitchen or bathroom. It can cause a big flood or what is called ‘invisible’ water damage, whereby a pipe cracks behind a wall and the effects are not immediately detected.

Water damage in Minnetonka homes may also be related to an impaired roof. If tiles, slates, or shingles are missing, rain can get inside and saturate the insulation and other materials. Similarly, if a kitchen appliance (such as a dishwasher) breaks down mid cycle, the flooring, walls, and cabinets are all susceptible to damage.

Keep reading to find out how remediation companies like SERVPRO deal with water damage in residential buildings.

Step One: Contact the Experts

Speed is of the essence for water damage repairs. The faster you get in touch with our team, the easier it is to reverse the destruction. After 48 hours, there is a significant risk of mold, so you need to arrange remediation quickly.

Step Two: Talk to Your Insurer

The SERVPRO team resides in the Minnetonka area. It means that they can guarantee a fast response. While they are inspecting the damage and formulating a drying plan, you can speak to your insurer. The technicians can answer any questions that they have about the estimated timeframe and cost of the job.

Step Three: Pump Standing Water

If a large volume of water is inside the house when we arrive, motorized pumps can be used to extract it quickly. Materials cannot be fully dried and cleaned until as much liquid has been removed as possible. Normally, this stage happens quite quickly. It is the precision drying which takes the longest amount of time.

Step Four: Drying with Dehumidifiers

Precision drying (or Applied Structural Drying) refers to a controlled schedule of dehumidification and humidity regulation. It relies on a carefully monitored arrangement of air movers and dehumidifiers to draw out water without causing further damage. It is particularly effective for porous items like carpets, curtains, and sofas.

Step Five: Cleaning with Biocides

In some cases, cleaning with strong detergents is not necessary. However, if the flood or leak contains gray water (mixed with other substances), there is a small risk of bacteria developing on surfaces. For this reason, SERVPRO wipes walls and non-porous objects with cleaning chemicals after drying is complete.

At SERVPRO of Minnetonka, we have all the expertise you need to rescue your home from water damage. We are a local service, so you can always get in touch and arrange repairs fast. Call us 24/7 at (952) 473-4837.

Water Removal in Groveland Has a Formula for Success

Exhaust Fans Reduce Humidity in Your Groveland Home

SERVPRO's Protocols Mitigate Water Damage to a Property

If you have flooding in your apartment, house or condo, how quickly you get the water out will determine how much it can cost you. In order to get the fastest results, you need a professional restoration company.

SERVPRO has decades of experience when it comes to water removal. Returning your Groveland home to its pre-flood state begins with one of our restoration teams. We keep a team ready 24 hours a day in order to quickly arrive, determine the amount of water to be removed and get to work within an hour of your phone call, when possible. We have three primary steps to putting your home back together:

Remove Standing Water - Technicians deploy one or more pumps depending on the size and floor plan of your home. This can be done in less than a day, even in one the larger homes such as a mini-mansion or a ranch style house. If power is not available, we can deploy generators to run the pumps. If your home is in an isolated area, we also have generator trucks available for around the clock support.

Extract Trapped Water - With the visible water pumped out, technicians now go to work removing the water in your floors and carpets. To accomplish this, our SERVPRO technicians use extraction devices that are designed to draw out the water without scratching or gouging floorboards or tearing up the nape of the carpet. We utilize special drying mats to suction off water and moisture from the joints of hardwood flooring and the supporting floor joists. If there is a pad underneath the carpeting, we may need to remove the carpet or float it, that is to release the material from the tack strips to  to dry it. If the pad is too soaked to dry without damaging it, we'll recommend that you replace it.

Lower Humidity Levels - Once the water has been removed, our technicians will test the air moisture levels in your home. If they are too high, there is the possibility that mold spores will expand in this environment and begin to grow. In order to bring the levels below 12 percent, response team members will set up a series of dehumidifiers. These machines can draw up to 30 gallons of moisture from the surrounding air.

If you have water in your home, SERVPRO of Minnetonka is here to help you deal with it quickly and in a professional manner. As a locally owned franchise, we are dedicated to helping our neighbors get their lives back to normal. Call us at (952) 473-4837 today to begin the removal and restoration process.

Professional restoration services use industry approved equipment and tools to help get you back into your home quickly.

Different Equipment Used To Remove Water

Professional restoration services use industry approved equipment and tools to help get you back into your home quickly. One such device is high volume air movers. Air movers are industrial fans used to speed up the drying process due to water damage. These powerful devices are created to move airflow at a high-velocity which will dry water damaged areas quickly.

Air movers can dry out floors, carpeting, upholstery, and walls quite rapidly. If water damage occurs in a Groveland residential or commercial site, SERVPRO brings in state-of-the-art equipment to help prevent any secondary damage. Industrial air movers are an essential tool in the restoration industry.

When technicians are repairing water damaged areas, a professional grade air mover gives SERVPRO experts fast drying results. Air movers help restoration experts with the following remediation steps:

• Removes Fumes - air movers help to rapidly remove fumes and gasses especially from a fire

• Ventilation - air movers can ventilate larger and small spaces.

• Drying - drying is a common use for air movers. Air movers promote evaporation which helps to shorten drying times for rooms or household items.

Air movers are also helpful when areas are humid from standing water, causing painted walls to sweat. High-speed air movers generate airflow across walls, carpets, pads, and furniture, which accelerates the evaporation of moisture.

Water Damage is Not All Alike
Three categories of water are involved in a situation with water damage. The category of water helps to determine the right water restoration method that we will use.

Category 1 water is known as white water or clean water. It is fresh water which is pumped into your home, meaning Category 1 water damage source can be broken water supply lines such as washing machine and dishwasher malfunctions that involve the water line, an overflowing sink or bathtub, or a damaged faucet. This type of water is harmless to people, but after forty-eight hours, it can turn into Category 2 water.

Category 2 water is usually referred to as gray water. It can come from wastewater in bathtubs, sinks, and showers, plus water which is discharged by washing machines and dishwashers. It includes the wastewater as well which hasn’t come into contact with human waste. Category 2 water damage happens when one of these appliances malfunctions. It will likely have a good amount of contamination and can pose a health risk. Because of the fast growth of mold and bacteria, this category of water becomes a Category 3 if it is left untreated for two or more days.

Category 3 water is also known as black water. The main source of this is sewage. It also happens during a flood because of the potential for chemicals in fertilizers, ground debris, animal waste and other areas that have contamination. Blackwater has toxins or organisms that can cause disease, and it is totally unsanitary.

Since every water damage situation is different and involves various safety categories of water, we offer a complete range of services to cover water damage cleanup projects of any scope or size.

When you experience Edina water damage of any kind, quickly give us a call at SERVPRO of Minnetonka by dialing (952) 473-4837. We will come to your property, assess your damages and draw up a plan for remediation so that we can restore your home back to normal as quickly as possible.

The Three Categories Of Minneapolis Residential Water Damage: A Brief Overview

11/30/2015 (Permalink)

The three categories of water are clear water, gray water, and black water.

A Brief Overview of The Three Residential Water Damages in Minneapolis

The Three Categories Of Water: A Brief Overview

Because water damage is a household issue that could strike your residential property at any time, learning more about it is a good idea. By attaining as much information as you can, you'll be more prepared to handle any Minneapolis water damage that creeps into your private living space. With that idea in mind, consider the information regarding the three categories of water damage that appear below:

 Category 1

The first category of water is referred to as "clear water." This type of water poses no significant threat to the individuals who come in contact with it. Although the water is clean when it surfaces on the property, it is subject to contamination from that point on. Some examples of category 1 water include sink overflows, toilet tank ruptures, and failed supply lines on appliances. The water that comes into your residential property is category 1 water.

 Category 2

The second category of water damage in Minneapolis is referred to as gray water. Gray water contains a certain level of contamination. The contamination can be biological, physical, or chemical. Water from this category can come from leaking water beds, broken aquariums, or the washing machine. When an individual is exposed to water from this category, she or he may experience significant sickness or physical discomfort.

 Category 3

Category 3 water contains the highest level of contamination and is called black water. This is the most dangerous water category and individuals exposed to it can experience serious health issues and even die. Black water comes from several sources, including the water that rises from the ocean and rivers. Additionally, Category 3 water can result from sewage damage or overflows. It can also result from water that moves through the ground before entering your residential space.

Three Reasons You Should Leave Water Damage Restoration in Edina To Professionals

9/24/2015 (Permalink)

Melting Ice and Snow Cause Many Water Damage Problems

SERVPRO Can Restore Your Water Damaged Home in Edina

Unfortunately, residential owners can find their homes in Edina subjected to water damage at any time. In many cases, the water damage results from a broken pipeline or leaky faucet or melting snow.  In other cases, a natural disaster is a culprit. Irrespective of the cause, water damage is a serious issue that must be handled immediately and effectively. In many cases, people want to complete a do-it-yourself project to eliminate water damage quickly and save money. However, this is not the most advantageous course of action. Unless water damage is minimal, it's almost always more prudent to obtain restoration services from a professional water damage restoration company like SERVPRO. Here are three reasons why:

1. Water Restoration Requires Special Equipment And Chemicals.

Unwanted water in your home, especially in very large volumes,  necessitates extraction, drying, dehumidifying and decontamination. These processes necessitate the use of special equipment and chemicals that the general public does not have at the ready. Homeowners do not have access to powerful water pumps, truck-mounted or mobile vacuums, powerful high-velocity fans, dehumidifiers and blowers. The equipment would fill your garage, and then you still need the training and expertise for the restoration. And the chemicals.

2. Professionals Possess Extensive Knowledge.

Advanced knowledge about the water damage restoration process comes from institutional training from the IICRC. We try to dry and repair, and not replace, household and structural building materials. It's your money. Applied structural drying (ASD), Odor Control training, and fabric cleaning are some of the skills that our technicians learn.

3. Professionals Can Identify Underlying Causes.

One benefit of hiring a professional water damage restoration services is that specialists can identify underlying causes that led to the problem. This is accomplished through the inspection and assessment process, and you will receive documentation from SERVPRO. Once they've done so, they can provide you with information and advice regarding how to prevent further problems from transpiring in the future.

Let SERVPRO Assist You Immediately

Over the last 50 years, the professionals of SERVPRO have helped hundreds of people restore their property after a water damage event to their home in Edina. Frozen Pipes in Minnetonka and Hopkins

12/9/2014 (Permalink)

Don't let frozen pipes ruin your home!

Water has a unique property in that it expands when it freezes and no matter how strong the “container” is holding it in, this expansion will eventually cause the container to break.  Here in Minnesota, pipes are even more susceptible to freezing due to the extreme temperatures we can experience.

Here are some helpful hints to help prevent your pipes from freezing:

  1. Close inside valves that feed outside hose bibs
  2. Keep garage doors closed
  3. If you are going away for the season, don’t lower your thermostat to below

If your pipes do freeze, here are some steps you can take to limit damage:

  1. If you turn on a faucet and only a small bit of water comes out, you may have a frozen pipe
  2. The most likely locations for a frozen pipe are in exterior walls or where the water comes into the home
  3. As you attempt to thaw the pipe, keep the faucet open so that the water can run though it
  4. You can apply heat to the pipe using an electric heating pad or a hair dryer.  Do not use a blow torch!

If all that fails and your frozen pipe bursts, give us a call.  Even in the cold Minnetonka and Hopkins winters, one of our certified technicians will be at your doorstep within four hours ready to help!  You can read more about our water removal services here: SERVPRO Minnetonka Water Restoration

Restoring Water Damaged Floors in Hopkins and Minnetonka

11/19/2014 (Permalink)

Our floor mat rescue system was able to dry out the hardwood floors in 4 days and saved the homeowners not only money but the headache of replacement!

At SERVPRO we often talk to our customers about restoring vs. replacing when their homes or businesses are damaged by fire or water.  The below photo is of a home in Minnetonka that was damaged by water when a dishwashing line broke.  The homeowners had just redone their kitchen and installed beautiful hardwood floors throughout.

Our technicians were able to place our rescue mat system on the floor within hours after the loss happened.  This specialized system creates a vacuum above the hardwood floors and sucks moisture from the floor and subfloor.

After 4 days of running the system the boards were dry and looked like brand new.  To replace the floor would have cost over $40,000.  The cost of running our mat system was less than 1/10 of that and the homeowners did not have to go through the headaches of a month long construction project in their kitchen.

Water Damaged Carpet in Minnetonka and Wayzata

Water can cause the backing of a carpet to separate from the top part of the carpet. This can cause the carpet to wrinkle.

We often get calls from customers who for one reason or another suffered water damage in their home and ended up with a wet or soaking carpet.  The first question we are typically asked is whether the carpet will "dry itself"?

The quick answer is no.  Carpet, when left wet can lead to carpet delaminanting.   This is when the glue that holds the backing to the main carpet starts to break down and seperate.

The good news is that most carpet that is damaged by water can be saved.  The key is getting as much moisture out of it as quickly as possible and then creating an environment where any remaining moisture will be evaportated from it through dehumidification.

Remember, time is of the essense -- the longer a carpet sits wet the tougher it will be to restore it!

Preventing Water Damage to your home in Minnetonka, Hopkins and Wayzata

A leaky roof will eventually lead to water damage in the home.

One of the easiest ways to prevent water damage to your home is to properly maintain it. Usually, the simplest details are what make the biggest difference. The first thing that you can do is inspecting the areas around your home. The ideal times to do your inspections are right before a season starts or after a season is over. One example is to inspect your gutters after the fall season so that you can prevent any clogs caused by falling leaves, which can end up causing a water leak that drips into your home. Another thing that you can do is inspecting your roof. If you notice anything different in your roof's color or shape, make sure that you hire a professional to inspect it properly.
